Far more identifiable is Homer Simpson, who is currently navigating his family through their 31st season. Groening including his initials on the show's principal character is a testament to his commitment. The vast majority of characters in The Simpsons have normal hair; however, the titular family doesn't and never has. Since the series began in December 1989, the Simpson family has become a staple of pop culture and their designs have become universally recognizable.
Much like the majority of the cast, the family changed considerably beyond their debut. Although they never dropped all of what made them special, to begin with. The Simpsons' characters' original look has been edited over time, forming the family's modern image. The one thing that has remained fairly consistent, however, is their unnatural hair. Homer is stuck with comb-over squiggles, Marge keeps her blue beehive, and Lisa, Maggie, and Bart retain their spiky, yellow locks. Because of this, the Simpsons stand out among their Springfield companions who are depicted with normal hair.

If Homer had been more sensitive to that fact, he might still have a full head of hair.
The episode was written by John Swartzwelder and directed by Jim Reardon. Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Ken Griffey Jr., Steve Sax, Ozzie Smith, José Canseco, Don Mattingly, Darryl Strawberry and Mike Scioscia all guest starred as themselves, playing the ringers hired by Mr. Burns. Terry Cashman sang "Talkin' Softball", a modified version of his song "Talkin' Baseball", over the end credits.
Burns gives Homer his old job back, sympathizing with him having male pattern baldness like Burns does. (We generally tried hard to avoid bad sitcom habits anyway.) So in “Simpson and Delilah,” dimoxinil works wonderfully, and it gets Homer hair, respect and a better life. Karl was originally supposed to return for a cameo appearance in the season 14 episode "Three Gays of the Condo". In the script, Homer was thrown out of the house by Marge, and encountered Karl. The purpose of the appearance was to introduce a gay couple that Homer would live with. Fierstein however felt that "the script was a lot of very clever gay jokes, and there just wasn't that Simpsons twist" and turned the role down.
Regular cast members Harry Shearer and Julie Kavner disliked the episode because of its focus on the guest stars and its surreal tone. IGN ranked the baseballers' performances as the seventeenth best guest appearance in the show's history, calling "each of these appearances was hilarious, making this a classic episode". The Phoenix.com praised the performances of each of the guest stars, but Darryl Strawberry, whom they put in the fifth position, was the only one to make their "Top 20 guest stars" list.
Karl’s sexual orientation is never made explicit, but he was going to be played by Harvey Fierstein. And he was going to be perfectly styled, and there was going to be a kiss. All of this really just meant that we wanted him to be as competent, intelligent and kind as any character we’d ever portrayed. Because the world we were writing about in Season Two was different from the one we live in now.
For as simple as his appearance is, there lies one aspect to it few fans notice - his hair and ear work in tandem to form a hidden signature. The episode title is a reference to the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp in the title role. During the episode, Homer tells Marge to just call him "Homer Fingerhands". Many scenes are parallels to the movie; for example the first time Homer cuts hair for money is a reference to the scene where Edward carves the ice angel with Maggie dancing as Kim does in the film.
After all, they are the principal characters of the show, so they should stand out. At the same time, keeping this aspect of their design ties them back to their roots. The way Groening first drew the family was unimpressive, to say the least. Their hair was scribbled, their fingers were different lengths, and their faces were not pleasing to the eye. It didn't take long for serious overhauls to take place across the board.
